No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
