England along with Wales Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales find themselves placed in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
